What is the main objective in become a vegetarian and if it does indeed make a difference?

I was handed a pamphlet on campus last week called Compassionate Choices, explaining the horrific reality of the meat industry involving tortured pigs, cows and chickens. It absolutely appauled me and I have been seriously considering becoming a vegetarian after doing some research. What I want to know is will one person becoming a vegetarian, really make a difference? I want to help, but is this an effective way?

Take it your way:

well it is disturbing as hell and very bad for the environment too. you could always be a vegetarian ,but can always eat meat by going to a place where they sell free ranged meat, like chicken, beef, and pork they are kinda hard to find ,but at least you can get meat sometimes. also i suggest you to drink soy milk instead of actual milk some cows are caged in are really in bad life condition, i mean they need to be milked but not to the extreme with steroids...

hmmm... I suggest you to watch food inc. if you are interest in more about our food we eat. not only meat ,but there are many disturbing facts about food.

I don't know if it does really , i mean watch man vs food tv show, loads of Americans particularly massively over eating. However its down to what you believe and having your own moral standard and personal integrity. However i do feel its a bit of a drop in the ocean, and if you watch a nature program , pretty much every creature is eating everything.

I would say that eating free range eggs and making an actual effort to purchase meat which has been terminated in the most humane way, is the step you should take if you decide to carry on eating meat

A young girl was walking along a beach upon which thousands of starfish had been washed up during a terrible storm. When she came to each starfish, she would pick it up, and throw it back into the ocean. People watched her with amusement.

She had been doing this for some time when a man approached her and said, “Little girl, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!”

The girl seemed crushed, suddenly deflated. But after a few moments, she bent down, picked up another starfish, and hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and, smiling, replied, “I sure made a difference to that one!”
